Can I grow better watermelon under lamps?

I live in Maine where watermelon aren't as sweet as they are in the South mostly because they don't get as much sun in the drastically shorter growing season. Sugerbabies seem to do great here but all sugerbabies I have ever seen were from here. I don't think this will be economical but maybe fun. Would I be on the right track if I set-up aluminum foil or space-blanket booths in my cellar, and strung them up with LEDs, adding a few halogens when fruit comes? Has anyone ever tried this with watermelon? What size pots will I need? (I have Carolina Cross in my collection.)
