GCSE Chemistry question? (carbonates and equations)?

Can someone please explain to me everything I need to know about carbonates? for example limestone is mainly calcium carbonate, what are they and what are their properties and what are they used for? also, how do I balance equations? and what are noble and halogen gases? :L thanks
